Why send a registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt

Registered mail proves that the letter was sent and lets you track it. With the acknowledgement of receipt (aviso de receção), you also get a signed proof of delivery at the recipient's address. Landlords, tenants and many companies in Portugal use it whenever a notice has to be proven.

In a tenancy, article 9 of the NRAU requires written form for notices between landlord and tenant about ending the lease, the rent update or works. A registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt is the usual way to send them.

To understand each option and what to keep as proof, read the guide how to send a registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt.

Timing: when the letter is posted

The letter is posted at a CTT counter within 2 working days of payment. From then on, delivery follows the CTT timelines for registered mail. If your notice has a deadline (for example the notice period of a rent update), send the request with some margin.

Why you are the sender. The letter goes out in your name and the acknowledgement of receipt comes back to your address. You keep the original proof of delivery, as if you had gone to the counter yourself. File it with the lease.

Shipment What it proves
Registered mail That CTT accepted the letter, and the route of the shipment
Registered with acknowledgement of receipt The same, plus the signature of the person who received it, with the date

General information, not legal advice. For notices with a deadline or that end a contract, check the rule that applies to your lease.

FAQ

Registered letter online, frequently asked questions

How much does a registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt cost?

€14.99 per letter, up to 10 A4 pages. The price includes printing, the envelope, CTT registered postage and the acknowledgement of receipt. No subscription, no hidden fees.

How long does it take?

The letter is posted at a CTT counter within 2 working days of payment. Delivery then follows the CTT timelines for registered mail. You get the tracking number by email.

Where does the acknowledgement of receipt go?

To the sender's address, which is yours. The letter goes out in your name, so CTT return the signed acknowledgement of receipt directly to you.

Do I need an account or a lease on Aluseg?

No. You need neither: upload the PDF, enter the addresses and pay on the page. You can send any letter, about a tenancy or not. If you manage your lets on Aluseg, letters can also start from the lease data.

Which file should I upload?

An A4 PDF of up to 10 pages and 10 MB, already signed if the letter needs it. It is printed in black and white exactly as uploaded: check dates, amounts and addresses before you pay.

Can a registered letter end a lease for unpaid rent?

No. Termination for unpaid rent requires a judicial notification or personal delivery by a lawyer, solicitor or enforcement agent (art. 9(7) NRAU). A registered letter works for the payment demand, the rent update or the opposition to renewal.

Can I send abroad?

Not yet. For now we only send to addresses in Portugal, including the Azores and Madeira.
