A rental listing in a high-demand area receives dozens of messages within a few hours. The landlord does not choose the “best tenant”; they choose the applicant who is easiest to assess. That is exactly the problem the Tenant Passport solves.
This guide explains what it is, what the landlord sees, how to create yours in about 5 minutes, and how to use it to respond to listings faster than everyone else.
The essentials in 30 seconds
- The Tenant Passport is a verifiable profile: identity, income, documents and references, filled in just once.
- You share one link with each application, and the landlord views it for free, with no account needed.
- Documents only open with your permission, and every opening is logged.
- It is free, and supporting documents that are read automatically earn the "Verified data" badge.
What is the Tenant Passport?
It is a digital application dossier, created on Aluseg, that gathers in a single profile everything a landlord needs in order to decide: who you are, what you earn, who you will live with and which documents prove it. Instead of resending PDFs by email for every listing, you fill it in once and share one link.
The difference from a simple ZIP of documents lies in the word verifiable: proof of income is read automatically and, when the value read matches the declared one, the profile shows the “Verified data” badge. A previous landlord can also confirm, in three clicks and without creating an account, that you always paid on time. It is the difference between claiming and proving.
What the landlord sees (and what they do not)
| Section | What it shows | Who controls it |
|---|---|---|
| Identity and contact details | Name, age, contact: the essentials needed to reply | You, section by section |
| Employment and income | Employment situation, declared income and Verified data when the supporting document matches | You |
| Household | Who you will live with (co-tenants) and guarantor, if any; both optional | You |
| Documents | Payslips, tax return, ID: they only open once you approve the landlord’s access request, and every opening is logged | You, request by request |
| Endorsements | Confirmation from previous landlords (“paid on time”), the one proof you cannot write yourself | The previous landlord signs |
| Rent-to-income ratio | Calculated automatically on the page the landlord sees | n/a |
How to create your Passport, step by step
- Create the free tenant account: email and password, no card (about 1 minute);
- Fill in the sections: identity, contact details, employment, income and household. Be accurate, because the declared income will be compared with the supporting documents;
- Upload your supporting documents: payslips, tax return, ID (the full list is in the guide to the documents needed to rent a house). Once the automatic reading confirms the values, the "Verified data" badge appears;
- Ask your previous landlord for an endorsement: you send them a link, they answer three simple questions without creating an account, and the confirmation is added to your profile;
- Share the link with each application, in the listing message, in your cover letter or via WhatsApp. The landlord opens it, sees the essentials and decides quickly.
Why it works (from the landlord’s side)
A landlord with twenty messages cannot analyse twenty dossiers sent as loose attachments. A link that opens an organised profile, with the rent-to-income ratio already calculated and verified data, is an application they can assess in two minutes. And whoever is easy to assess makes the shortlist.
There is a second, less obvious effect: the Passport reduces the demand for guarantees. Many landlords ask for a guarantor because they cannot gauge the risk of a stranger; verified income, an endorsed history and complete documents answer that underlying doubt, as we explain in the guide to renting a house without a guarantor.
When the Passport makes the most difference
- No guarantor in Portugal: newly arrived foreigners and young people, where verification replaces part of the missing trust;
- Self-employed work (recibos verdes, freelancer receipts): proven average income weighs more than the professional category (how to prove your income);
- High-demand areas: Lisbon, Porto, Braga, where speed of response decides and your dossier is already ready;
- Applications for support schemes: the same organised documents work for Porta 65 and for rent support.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Tenant Passport really free?
Yes. Creating, filling in, verifying and sharing the Passport is free for the tenant. The landlord does not pay to view it either.
Does the landlord need an Aluseg account to see my profile?
No. They open your link and see the profile directly, with no registration. Only the documents require an access request, which you approve.
Who can see my documents?
Only the landlords whose access request you approve, and every opening is logged on your profile. You can revoke access and regenerate the link at any time.
What is the "Verified data" badge?
When you upload proof of income, the value is read automatically and compared with what you declared. If they match, the profile shows the badge, so the landlord knows the figure is more than just a claim.
I have a guarantor: can I include them too?
Yes, the guarantor field exists and is optional, just like co-tenants. If you do not have one, the Passport presents everything else, and that is often enough.
Note: informational article. The Passport presents your information in an organised and verifiable way; the decision to rent always belongs to the landlord.
